Literature Text

The first time we went out on a date, she told me her favorite music was country.
I’ve always been more of an Ed Sheeran in the morning, Queen in the evening
kind of guy- always Thinking Out Loud  about Fat Bottom Girls and suddenly
I’m Going Slightly Mad and I Don’t know what I’m going to do.
I was always a Weightless kind of guy at an All Time Low,
A Miserable at Best hopeless romantic with a Mayday Parade demeanor.
She was a Fishin’ in the Dark kind of girl with eyes as blue as the ocean-
The Perfect Storm of spunk and class, intelligence and sass.
This girl was like a Honey Bee and I was a freshly brewed cup of tea-
we belonged together and even though I Knew You were Trouble When You Walked In
I couldn’t take my eyes off of you. I guess I Must be Doing Something Right because
day after day she keeps putting up with my crazy antics as I continued to fall for her,
mesmerized as if a Wagon Wheel was spinning endlessly in front of my Lonely Eyes.
Her smile is like Sunshine and Whiskey, her eyes could sway the sun to set
so that the two of us could Leave the Night On forever, drive Somewhere in My Car,
her favorite song would come on a country station and she would crank the volume up-
she would Play it Again and again Til it’s Gone, her voice singing along would Take Me There.
And If I Die Young, I can only hope that she would remember the sound of my voice,
the touch of my hand on the back of her neck. Because I am so Amazed by her, I want to make her feel Wanted. She’s more than just a Girl in a Country Song, She’s Everything.

There Must Be Something in the Water because A Woman Like You has never graced
the earth with her presence before and when I Look at You, the fuzzy feeling in my chest
spreads to my feet and my hands and makes me want to crawl out of my skin and fall into
your arms. I would do everything in my power to make you Stay just one more minute,
and though I’m not sure if you want me to Kiss You Tonight, it would Sure Be Cool if You Did.
I want to hold you in my arms forever, Stuck Like Glue, Show You Off, Love You Like That;

When I’m with you, I know it’s not a coincidence, it is every country station on the radio playing
God Gave Me You simultaneously so loud the world can hear it, it’s every Big Green Tractor I used to ignore suddenly reminding me of the music that plays faintly while you read.
Maybe I can be just a little bit country…
not Like a Cowboy.
But close.
Here's something a little bit different for y'all. I wrote this to be performed as a spoken word poem, but it holds its own as a written piece as well. I had somewhat of a crush on a close friend of mine back when we first met, and I wrote this after she convinced me to attend karaoke night at the university coffee shop with her. That was the first night we really spent time together, and I learned just how much she loves country music, which is something I absolutely despise. I wrote this as sort of a sneaky plan to perform it at open mic night later in the year and convince her to come, but I never ended up doing so.

I'm a huge fan of the way this turned out. I had to Google Country songs because I knew so few names, but this was essentially written around a list of songs I wanted to include. It was actually a lot of fun to put together, even if it never got performed. I really hope y'all like it.

:peace:
